John practices intellectual property law with an emphasis on patent and trademark litigation at Carlson Caspers. He represents clients from a broad range of industries, including pharmaceuticals, biochemistry, and mechanical engineering. John draws on his legal, business and organizational experience to provide unique perspective, effective case administration, and creative legal solutions to complex challenges. A regular contributor to the firm’s ANDA Advisors Blog, he is skilled at translating highly technical information into the languages of judges, juries and the public.

John’s experience in federal trial court and in the federal prosecutor’s office has given him a first-person understanding of trial and courtroom procedure, and enables him to guide clients through all stages of intellectual property litigation, from claim construction to post-trial motions and appeals. Prior to joining Carlson Caspers, John served for two years as a law clerk to the Honorable Ann D. Montgomery of the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota. While attending the University of Michigan Law School, John was a judicial extern for the Honorable Ann Claire Williams of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, an intern for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Carolina, and an active participant in the school’s Child Advocacy Legal Clinic.

After earning his undergraduate degree, John served as a finance director, fundraiser, community organizer, and researcher for various not-for-profit organizations. John uses the skills developed in these roles to help clients identify and pursue coordinated legal strategies and resolve potential conflicts.

John is committed to serving the community, whether providing pro bono legal advice or volunteering for charitable and civic organizations. He is actively involved with the MacGroveland Community Council and Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and currently serves his church as a deacon. John has also been a volunteer teacher at a refugee center in Cairo, Egypt, and a member of the board of directors of the Summit Hill Association.
